Developed a concept for sandblasting railway carriages

  • Reduced the entry time from one day to a couple of hours per carriage
  • Designed a carriage oriented control coordinate system for operators
  • 3 robots mounted on 40m long rails

Equipment used for the job:

  • Siemens Simatic S7-30o series PLC
  • Yaskawa robots
  • Bespoke packages to process captured data

A leading Belgian engineering company, that holds a number of patents,

in the sandblasting and shot peening industry asked me to develop a

procedure to capture a contour of a railway carriage to be used for

periodical refurbishment process with minimal manual data entry.

The approach was developed around three robots on 40m long rails. The

same robots that would be used for paint removal would have been used

for scanning the contour.

A suitable optical sensor was selected and a university team invited to

join the team, tasked to develop the 3D mathematical model after

measuring points were captured.
